The first look at a feature-length documentary about notorious internet tycoon Kim Dotcom has been released online.

Kim Dotcom: Caught in the Web, directed by Annie Goldson and partially funded by the film commission, is set to premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) in Texas next week.

"The battle between Dotcom and the US Government and entertainment industry, being fought in New Zealand, is one that goes to the heart of ownership, privacy and piracy in the digital age," says the SXSW website.

"Three years in the making, this independent film chronicles a spectacular moment in global online history, dubbed the 'largest copyright case' ever and the truth about what happened."

Dotcom, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, was recently ruled eligible for extradition to the US by the High Court, along with his three co-accused.

If he is sent, he will face trial on 13 counts including conspiracy to commit racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering and copyright infringement.

The US Justice Department alleges MegaUpload's file-sharing business cost copyright owners, including the Hollywood studios, some US$500 million, with the site making at least US$175 million in profits during its run, largely from users illegally downloading movies, songs and TV shows.
