Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hailed an instant classic by critics

Nintendo's latest release is a certified instant classic as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild wows critics with multiple perfect review scores.

The game was released in New Zealand on Friday.

It has garnered perfect review scores at IGN, Polygon, Game Informer, Gamespot, Giant Bomb, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Forbes, Time, Destructoid, DualShockers and Yahoo, among others.

Breath of the Wild currently has an aggregated critical score of 98 percent on Metacritic - putting it up not just as a contender for the best game of 2017, but also as one of the highest-rated games of all time.

The website has it in 4th place, behind Grand Theft Auto IV, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and previous Legend of Zelda title, 1998's Ocarina of Time.

"Evocative, exhilarating and a masterclass in open-world design," writes Jose Ostero for IGN.

"A game that marries the best bits of the franchise's long history with the best bits of the rest of the gaming world, and produces something even greater than the sum of its parts," writes Alex Hern for The Guardian.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is on sale now for the Wii U and Nintendo Switch.
