Film review: Loving

The latest outing from acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Nichols has arrived in cinemas and includes an Oscar-nominated performance from actress Ruth Negga.

Loving is the story of an inter-racial couple in '60s United States fighting for their simple right to be husband and wife.

Richard and Mildred Loving have one simple request - to live as man and wife, in a house they've built themselves, on land they paid for, with the children they love.

The law says just as simply, no.

Set in the early '60s in the US' South, the state of Virginia refuses to allow inter-racial marriage.

And in Caroline County, the vile Deputy Sheriff is only too happy to enforce it.

Soon the Lovings will be forced from the home they love, to a city they don't, to try and raise a family.

But their plight soon garners the attention of civil rights campaigners, who see an opportunity to use the couple and their case to bring about huge change.

Soon the entire nation will know the Lovings, reluctant heroes in a much bigger fight for one simple freedom.

Nichols has such a fresh and distinctive eye, his choice to mainline into the simple intimacies of love and family will better suit those of you who like their stories told slowly and gently - a choice which won't work for some.

Great performances across the board. Three-and-a-half stars.
