Hasbro has resurrected the T-rex in time for this year's World Monopoly Day.

The long-dead dinosaur is one of three new pieces being introduced, alongside the penguin and rubber ducky.

New editions of the classic board game will no longer come with the thimble, the boot or the wheelbarrow.

"The global Monopoly community has spoken," said Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro.

"The next generation of tokens clearly represents the interests of our fans around the world, and we're proud to have our iconic game impacted by the people that feel most passionate about playing it."

The new tokens were the winners of a poll of 4.3 million Monopoly fans from more than 100 countries.

The triple-change follows 2013's replacement of iron, in favour of a cat.

The new Monopoly line-up of the T-rex, Scottie dog, top hat, car, battleship, cat, rubber ducky and penguin will be out in August.

March 19 is World Monopoly Day, marking the exact date in 1930 when Parker Brothers (now owned by Hasbro) acquired the rights to the game.
