An ensemble of Kiwi actors are gathering for Sir Peter Jackson's latest film project, Mortal Engines.

The film is based on the award-winning book of the same name from British author Philip Reeve.

Local Kiwi actors Mark Hadlow (The Hobbit, King Kong), Nathaniel Lees (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Matrix), Caren Pistorius, (The Light Between Oceans),  Joel Tobeck (Little Fish, The Water Horse) and Stephen Ure (Lord of the Rings,) are some of the New Zealanders joining the cast, as well as Australians Sophie Cox, Menik Gooneratne, Andrew Lees and Terry Norris.

Producing the film adaptation are Sir Peter and Fran Walsh (The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies), having been involved with the project for several years.

The film has previously put out a casting call for Wellingtonians to work as extras on the project.

The film will be directed by Christian Rivers, who has worked closely with Sir Peter in the past. He won an Oscar for his work on King Kong in 2005.

Production is slated to begin in New Zealand this autumn, with the film is set to be released on December 14, 2018.
