New Avatar game on the way

Ubisoft has announced a videogame that aims to transport players to the beautiful world of Pandora, the setting of James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar.

The new game is likely to coincide with the release of Avatar's cinematic sequel, which is in production now, set for a December 2018 release.

Being developed by Massive Entertainment, the game is described as "cutting edge" while in the early stages of development, and is expected to be available on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Ubisoft were not approached to make an Avatar game, but rather came up with the idea themselves and pitched it to Cameron, who was excited by the possibility.

"What impressed me about Massive were the group's passion for this project and the power of its Snowdrop [gaming] engine," he said in a statement.

"I believe [the] team is absolutely the right partners to bring the beauty and danger of Pandora to life."

The fictional planet, which is where all the action is set in the film, was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the game, according to the project's managing director David Polfeldt.

"I came out of the movie and I thought, 'It's unbelievable how much I want to go there'. It's interesting how they have created that feeling that Pandora is actually a beautiful place where you would like to be," he said.

Massive has stated it hopes to deliver on the appeal of Pandora, and has promised to bring the same "insane attention to detail" as the original film's crew did.
