Power Rangers features cinema's first gay superhero

The big screen Power Rangers adaptation hitting cinemas boasts the big screen's first gay superhero.

Although there are dozens upon dozens of LGBT superheroes in pop culture, Trini the Yellow Ranger is believed to be the first in a mainstream Hollywood superhero film.

Beauty and the Beast courted controversy after featuring Disney's first openly gay character, which saw it pulled from screens in Malaysia and given an R16+ rating in Russia.

Now Power Rangers is set to upset homophobes and strict conservatives all over again.

Trini, played by pop star and actor Becky G, is revealed in one scene to be having "girlfriend problems", a moment that the film's director has described as "pivotal".

"For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is," Dean Israelite told the Hollywood Reporter.

"She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, 'That's OK'. The movie is saying, 'That's OK', and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."

In the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers series, the Yellow Ranger was played by Thuy Trang, who was portrayed as straight.
