Trailer released for Captain Underpants film adaptation

An unabashedly childish book series that centres almost exclusively on toilet humour has found its way to the silver screen in a high-budget animated film adaptation.

The Captain Underpants series will be remembered fondly by many who grew up in the late 1990s and early 2000s for its silliness and total dedication to all things excrement, toilets, wedgies, underpants and snot.

The American Library Association announced the series was their most complained about in 2012 after schools criticised it for being insensitive, encouraging kids to disobey authority, and featuring a reference to one of the characters being gay.

But those issues probably seem a long time ago for the series' creators, after Dreamworks bought rights to the story and started creating a 3D-animated movie version.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie features the voicing talents of Hollywood actors Ed Helms, Kevin Hart, Kristen Schaal and Jordan Peele.

The story centres around the plot of the original book series, which sees two young primary school students accidentally hypnotise their hostile school principal, Mr Krupp, and turn him into a superhero they'd dreamt up together: Captain Underpants.

They eventually use their unintentional creation of the unintelligent superhero to prevent the villainous Professor Poopypants from taking over the world.

The film is scheduled for release on September 28, 2017.
