Bill O'Reilly accused of sexual harassment, Mercedes-Benz pulls ads

In an explosive set of new reports, Fox News star Bill O'Reilly is alleged to have made multiple settlements with women who accused him of sexual harassment.

Mercedes-Benz has pulled ads from The O'Reilly Factor in the wake of the claims, with a spokesperson for the car company calling them "disturbing".

O'Reilly is alleged to have behaved inappropriately with a number of women who either appeared on his show or worked for him - ranging from verbal abuse, lewd comments, unwanted advances and phone calls in which it sounded as if he was performing a sex act.

The New York Times reports settlements made with five women totalled US$13 million.

A statement from the US cable channel said it has "looked into these matters over the last few months and discussed them with Mr O'Reilly. While he denies the merits of these claims, Mr O'Reilly has resolved those he regarded as his personal responsibility".

Donna Boland of Mercedes-Benz told media the company has "reassigned" advertising amid the controversy.

"The allegations are disturbing and, given the importance of women in every aspect of our business, we don't feel this is a good environment in which to advertise our products right now," says Ms Boland.

Fox News chairman Roger Ailes left the company in disgrace last year amid a slew of sexual harassment claims and, following the O'Reilly news, another lawsuit has been brought against him.

Julie Roginsky, a contributor to the channel, is accusing Ailes of sexually harassing her and says the environment inside the network has not changed since the former boss was forced to leave.

Wendy Walsh, a former O'Reilly Factor commentator, spoke to media with her lawyer on Monday (local time), accusing O'Reilly of inappropriate behaviour.

She is also calling for an independent investigation into the culture at Fox News in light of the mounting sexual harassment claims.

O'Reilly is the most watched host in US cable news, with The O'Reilly Factor reportedly generating US$446 million in advertising revenue between 2014 and 2016.

In New Zealand, The O'Reilly Factor and Fox News are broadcast on Sky TV channel 88.
