Ex-cricketer John Wright makes unexpected career change

John Wright has made an unlikely career change, from the cricketing batsman and coach to singer-songwriter.

The 62-year-old has dropped his debut album Red Skies, with the first single, 'Drivin into Mot' dedicated to the small Top of the South summer hotspot of Motueka.

It's a stark change from Wright's first career as a top cricketer - the first Kiwi batsman to pass 4000 Test runs - where he made a name for himself throughout the cricketing world.

After his lengthy and decorated career, Wright then went on to coach India's national side from 2000 to 2005.

He also had an 18-month stint as Blackcaps coach between 2010 and 2012.

It was on the road as coach where Wright wrote many of the songs which feature on his country blues-inspired album which took two years to record. It also features the Sou'Westers Liam Ryan and Dean Hetherington.

Wright performed at the Motueka Memorial Hall on Sunday, with proceeds going to Vision Motueka Trust for the Motueka Kai Fest fund.
