Hacker leaks Orange is the New Black episodes after Netflix rejects ransom demand

Ten episodes of the upcoming season of Orange is the New Black have been leaked online.

A hacker, only known as 'thedarkoverlord', claimed on Saturday (NZ time) he had 10 of the 13 episodes but wouldn't release them if Netflix paid up.

The popular series' fifth season isn't due to be released officially until June 9.

Variety reports thedarkoverlord put an 11.46GB file on torrent site The Pirate Bay after Netflix refused to pay him an undisclosed amount of money.

"It didn't have to be this way, Netflix. You're going to lose a lot more money in all of this than what our modest offer was," the hacker wrote.

"We're quite ashamed to breathe the same air as you. We figured a pragmatic business such as yourselves would see and understand the benefits of cooperating with a reasonable and merciful entity like ourselves."

Netflix said law enforcement had been notified.

"A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised," the company said before the files were released.

The hacker claims to have other unreleased episodes of series owned by ABC, Fox and National Geographic. Thedarkoverlord said the same offer applies.

"To the others: there's still time to save yourselves. Our offer(s) are still on the table - for now."

Orange is the New Black is one of Netflix's most popular shows, and has been renewed up until season seven. The show follows the experiences of women in a US prison.
