Backpack kid Russell Got Barzz's dance moves upstage Katy Perry

A 15-year-old boy who claims he can't dance has successfully displaced the infamous 'left shark' at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show as Katy Perry's most memorable back-up dancer.

Russell Horning, who earned an Instagram following after popularising a strange and extraordinary new dance move that comprises of fervent swinging of the arms, just broadened his fanbase with a performance alongside Perry on Saturday Night Live.

The 'Firework' hitmaker, who was performing her just-released track 'Swish Swish', invited Russell to do his characteristic dancing during the song's breakdown - and that he did, to the awe of the audience.

After starting off slowly, Perry then called on him to start doing the movement at double-speed, which he did - and many believed the moment upstaged the pop singer, who was slated for a poor vocal performance and exploiting queer culture.

Perry shared a video from backstage at Saturday Night Live, showing her trying to emulate Russel's dancing style but failing miserably, drawing a smile from the notoriously expressionless teen.

Russell, better known by his pseudonym Russell Got Barzz, has now been featured on both Katy Perry and Rihanna's Instagram accounts, and has more than 500,000 followers of his own.

A number of social media users say he's eclipsed 'left shark', which became a viral sensation following Perry's Super Bowl performance in 2015.
