Charlie Hunnam 'stalked' his way to King Arthur role

Guy Ritchie's reimagining of the King Arthur legend has just hit NZ cinemas, with local distributers hoping the blockbuster fares better than it has on release in the US.

So far Arthur has had a rather rocky start at the box office, labelled the first big flop of the summer in the US.

But the film's star Charlie Hunnam, has a big pool of fans here, thanks the cult hit TV show Sons of Anarchy

Guy Ritchie was not one of those fans, in fact, he says he had to be talked into casting Hunnam into the role.

"I didn't really know who Charlie was before this film. I had my sights set on other guys, but Charlie basically said 'I'm it', and ended up banging on my door," Ritchie said.

"I had little choice but to give him a swing at that ball, and he knocked it out of the park."

Hunnam corroborates this outrageous claim, saying "I did stalk him".

"I'm an enormous fan of his, and of the Arthurian legend. When the two things collided I said 'that's the job that I want'. And he said well that's fine, but I don't want you.

"And I said 'well that's unacceptable pal, I'm coming to England and we're having a cup of tea.'"

Hunnam describes "our Arthur" as "very much the everyman".

"It's cheeky, it's fun and very cool.. there is an undeniable cool factor to everything that guy does, is sort of rock n roll badass".
