A private jet once used by Elvis Presley has sold well below its estimate at auction.

The aircraft has been sitting unused for about 30 years on the tarmac in Roswell, New Mexico.

The Lockheed Jetstar sold for NZ$609,000, despite not having an engine.

The inside of the private jet was customised by Elvis, and includes red velvet chairs.

Auctioneers estimated it would go for more than NZ$3 million.

Two other planes once owned by the King - Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II - are on display in Graceland, Elvis' estate.
