A new Game of Thrones trailer has been released for the show's forthcoming seventh series - and the first full-length clip gives fans the best idea yet of what's to come.

The return of the HBO series is one of the most highly anticipated TV events of the year, with more than 500,000 people having watched the trailer in the two hours since it came out.

"Enemies to the east, enemies to the west, enemies to the south, enemies to the north," Queen Cersei narrates at the start of the trailer, as clips of those from the other kingdoms flash on screen.

"Whatever stands in our way, we will defeat it."

Daenerys Targaryen makes the bold claim she was "born to rule the Seven Kingdoms, and I will", while Sansa Stark is told she's "the last best hope against the coming storm" as all the kingdoms attempt to stake a claim for the Iron Throne.

However all of them appear to deny the very real looming threat of the White Walkers - all except Ser Davos Seaworth, who delivers an ominous warning to those in Westeros.

"If we don't put aside our enmities and bound together, we will die - and then it won't matter whose skeleton sits on the Iron Throne."

The trailer's ending is a wide shot of a dragon flying over hundreds of troops and horses on a battlefield - with narration announcing that "the great war is here".

The new season of Game of Thrones begins on July 16.
