There's always money in the banana stand, and it appears Netflix believes there's money in making more Arrested Development.

Star Jason Bateman has confirmed he's signed up for the cult show's fifth season, tweeting it's "very probable I'm going to put some miles on the Stair Car this summer".

The reference might not make sense to anyone who hasn't seen the show, which describes itself as the "story of a wealthy family who lost everything", but fans know exactly what he means.

Producer Mitch Hurwitz last year said he was "very close" to cutting a deal with Netflix for a fifth season.

"It's the thing I'm really desperate to do."

The show originally ran for three seasons in the early 2000s to widespread critical acclaim, but it wasn't a commercial hit. Netflix revived it for a fourth season in 2013, which had mixed reviews - the show's structure was changed radically to account for the cast's varied schedules.

Since the show's initial run, many of the cast have gone onto bigger Hollywood roles, particularly Will Arnett and Michael Cera.

It's not clear if the fifth season will be like the fourth, and have each episode focus on a particular character, or revert to the original freewheeling format of the first three seasons.

Hurwitz says he'd made a director's cut of the fourth season to make it more like the first three, but it has never been released.
