Johnny Depp often drunk, late to Pirates of the Caribbean set - report

Johnny Depp's public image continues to take a battering, with an explosive new report claiming his alleged drunkenness and tardiness caused havoc on the last Pirates of the Caribbean set.

The detailed report in Hollywood Reporter has crew members saying his "excessive drinking" and "physical fights" with estranged wife Amber Heard were out of control.

Depp's spending also became so outrageous, earning more than US$650 million over the last 13 years wasn't enough to pay his bills, his ex-manager claims.

The Donnie Brasco star's extravagance reportedly includes $US3.6 million annually for his 40-person staff, $US350,000 monthly for maintaining his 156-foot yacht, $US30,000 monthly for wine and $US5 million to shoot the ashes of his friend Hunter S Thompson out of a cannon.

Sources close to the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales production say his erratic behaviour began to bend the filming schedule.

An unmarked car was often said to be parked outside the Queensland residence Depp had rented from Grand Prix champion Mick Doohan, so that the production assistant in it could alert crew when the star awoke in the morning (or afternoon).

"When he got up, he'd turn on the light, and the moment the light went on they'd call the line producer, who would then call the directors: 'He's up! He's getting ready!'," an on-set source told Hollywood Reporter.

"They even had a special code term, like 'The eagle has landed.' Johnny had no idea this was going on."

The reported chaos Depp caused in Queensland included his infamous smuggling of pet dogs into the country. Following the production, he was divorced by Heard amidst claims of domestic violence.
