'Laugh, Shaka Brah!' - Dwayne Johnson shrugs off bad Baywatch reviews

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is laughing at the abysmal reviews his new film Baywatch is getting, nonchalantly flipping them off with a Shaka Brah.

The big screen remake of the hit TV show is being mauled by critics, landing a Metacritic score of 38 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 19Total Film calls it "unfunny, unthrilling and unsexy... doesn't even reach the low bar set by the source material".

Johnson, currently the highest paid actor in Hollywood according to Forbes and the sexiest man alive according to People, isn't fussed by the low scores - if an emoji-decorated tweet is anything to go by.

Responding to a fan's message, Johnson says critics are out of touch with audiences and suggests everyone simply hang loose.

Baywatch also stars Priyanka Chopra, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Jon Bass, Kelly Rohrbach and Ilfenesh Hadera.

At Wednesday night preview screenings across North America it pulled in US$1.3 million, after reportedly costing more than US$60 million to make.

Baywatch opens in New Zealand on June 1.
