Pecking Order: Best in show, chicken style, hits big screens

A New Zealand documentary described as the "ultimate chick flick" premieres in Christchurch tonight.

Pecking Order follows a power struggle at the Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon Club.

The film has all the makings of a classic thriller: the passionate heroes, the powerful authority figure, and the conspiracy to unseat him.

Pecking Order delves into the world of competitive chicken fancying in Canterbury.

Director Slavko Martinov stumbled on the competitions and described them as "best in show, but with chickens. And it's real".

He immediately identified the potential for a special Kiwiana film.

"I think people will just really love seeing how different chickens are from what they perceive them to be, and just the really terrific characters that sparkle in the film," he told Newshub.

The film will be shown in theatres across the country before winging its way to Australia, Europe and the US.
