Twin Peaks teaser released ahead of reboot

Iconic television series Twin Peaks is making its highly anticipated return this month - and the show's cult following finally has something to salivate over.

Just three weeks out from the show's premiere on May 22 (NZ time), US TV network Showtime has finally released a teaser that features short clips showing just what the reboot will look like.

The teaser trailer is only 30 seconds-long, and shows just the faces of the series' main characters, giving no indication of the plotline - though it looks as though it will be visually stunning.

The new series, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of the last airing of a Twin Peaks episode, consists of 18 episodes. Two of them have been selected to play at this month's Cannes Film Festival.

Twin Peaks ran for two seasons in the early 1990s, but was cancelled after plummeting ratings. However, it gained a large fanbase in the years following its cancellation, and is widely recognised as one of the best TV series' of all time.

The drama series follows an investigation led by FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) into the death of homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), and is lauded for its surrealist flourishes and odd humour.

Little is known about what will happen in the remake, but Showtime president David Nevins said in January that "the core of it is Agent Cooper's odyssey back to Twin Peaks", the fictional setting of the show.

Both main protagonist MacLachlan and the show's creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, returned to their respective roles for the reboot.
