You could be forgiven for thinking it's 1987 instead of 2017, but Atari has confirmed rumours it is building a new gaming console.
"We're back in the hardware business," Atari CEO Fred Chenais told tech site VentureBeat.
The confirmation follows a mysterious YouTube video uploaded by an account named Ataribox, showing close-up shots of wood panelling, reminiscent of the company's classic 2600 console, first released in 1977.
It's not clear if the new console, said to be based on PC technology, will compete with modern consoles like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, or try to cash in on the growing retro gaming market.
Atari was one of the biggest names during the golden age of video games. Its 1982 game based on Steven Spielberg's hit movie, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, was such a commercial disaster, it almost singlehandedly wiped out the burgeoning gaming industry.
Hundreds of thousands of cartridges were buried in a landfill.
The original Atari Inc broke up in 1984, the brand changing hands a number of times over the next few decades. In 2013 Atari filed for bankruptcy, but has since become profitable by focusing on "LGBT, social casinos, real-money gambling and YouTube".
Atari says the Ataribox has been "years in the making".
The last original console Atari made was 1993's Jaguar.
Some of the company's biggest gaming hits include Asteroids, Pong and Centipede.
