Prada has been ridiculed by Twitter users for the humble product at a not-so-humble price.

Italian fashion house Prada has been ridiculed by Twitter users after unveiling its US$180 (NZ$248) paper clip.

The polished sterling silver clip is on sale at New York department store Barney's, marketed as a 'Paperclip-Shaped Money Clip'.

It's a mere 6cm in length and the only distinguishing feature setting it apart from other paper clips is a small 'Prada' logo embossed on the side.

Many on Twitter were baffled at the high cost - let alone the concept. Some users expressed serious concern for anyone willing to part with their cash for the product.

Twitter user Kim Thai quipped that "This sh*t better hold my life together y'all", while Jeff Barrett wrote the clip "can hold all of the money you don't have after you buy it".

The new product may come across as somewhat ironic for those who knew head designer Miuccia Prada in her younger days.

Once a member of the Italian Communist Party, it may seem to some that the designer has forgotten her proletarian roots.
