A lifelike robot designed to recreate 'intimate human oral interaction' is horrifying many who come across it.

But some are looking forward to Arlan Robotics' Service Droid 1.0, with almost £6500 (NZ$11,500) pledged towards its creation on crowdfunding site Indiegogo.

The robot "started life as a personal project, created out of curiosity given the complete lack of quality male sex toys on the market", according to its creator, whose name is unknown.

He says was inspired after reading a statistic online that claimed a third of all men under 30 "have never had a physical relationship with a partner".

"As an engineer I knew there had to be a creative, affordable solution that would replicate human interaction - I just had to put my mind to it."

The result, he claims, is "shockingly realistic".

"My wife refuses to enter the room when it is set up - she feels very uncomfortable around it."

Users can dress the droid how they like, and there's a male head available as well as female.

Customers who pledge £245 or more can even get an "anime edition" head.

Reaction online has been largely negative.

Facebook users say the device is wrong and will encourage people to avoid human interaction.

"This is bad and wrong and most importantly kind of a sad attempt for the level of technology we're at. Every part of that design is... sad," one user said.

"Not to kink-shame, but that's mildly horrifying," another person wrote.

"And people wonder why true relationships and actually putting in the effort for a real human has gone so far downhill these day."

The engineer behind the robot says his next project "will push the boundaries even further".
