Top Gear star Richard Hammond hospitalised after 'frightening' crash

Former Top Gear host Richard Hammond has been airlifted to hospital after a horror smash in Switzerland.

The 47-year old British TV star was filming The Grand Tour with Jeremy Clarkson and James May when the serious crash took place.

Hammond "was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames", The Grand Tour said in a statement.

"It was the biggest crash I've ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly OK," Clarkson tweeted.

The Grand Tour said the serious crash took place after completing the Hemburg Hill Climb in Switzerland. No one else was involved in the accident.

Hammond was lucky to escape with only a knee fracture,

The $3.5 million Rimac electric supercar was not so lucky. It is completely burned out.

Hammond was in a serious car accident while filming for Top Gear in 2006. He suffered brain injuries and was in a coma for two weeks.
