Damon Lindelof is set to bring Alan Moore's cult DC Comic Watchmen back to screens as an HBO series.

The highly celebrated graphic novel was adapted for the big screen in 2009 by Zack Snyder, who went on to helm Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and is not involved in the new TV show.

Lindelof is most well known as the showrunner of Lost and this year won critical acclaim for the conclusion to another series, The Leftovers.

"From the flashbacks to the nonlinear storytelling to the deeply flawed heroes, these are all elements that I try to put into everything I write," Lindelof has previously said of Watchmen.

Snyder was briefly attached to the HBO project in its early stages. He recently handed the reins to Justice League over to Joss Whedon, taking time off work himself to deal with a family tragedy.
