100 Men reflects personally on gay revolution

Sex, love, history and repression - a Kiwi filmmaker's intriguing insight into the gay world is guaranteed to get people talking.

100 Men is screening at the New Zealand International Film Festival and draws on director Paul Oremland's past relationships both at home and abroad.

The film tracks a 40-year revolution in attitudes towards homosexuals, from outlaws to being allowed to marry.

"It was a long time ago and the world was very different back then... which is partly what this is about," Oremland told Newshub.

The film's told through Paul's past.

"I came up with this idea of, let's track down people I've met through sex... lovers, one-night-stands, friends."

What he uncovers is that progress has come with a price.

"One of the people in the film says they've made us, them," Oremland said.

"Another guy says we wanted to be equal, but not the same.

"We're still unique and that's one of the things I wanted to explore."

An exploration is perhaps the best way to describe 100 Men, providing a very personal perspective on the past.
