Rihanna, Jimmy Kimmel and Chance the Rapper are among the hordes of celebrities giving their condolences after the shock death of Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington.

The 41-year-old was found dead on Thursday morning (US time) in an apparent suicide at a residence in Los Angeles, according to TMZ.

He leaves behind six children, wife Talinda Ann Bentley and also scores of fans, who will now be mourning the death of a man whose life was blighted by drug addiction, depression and childhood sexual abuse.

Among those fans are a swathe of fellow celebrities, who took to Twitter to offer their sympathies and tributes to the fallen rock star.

Bandmate Mike Shinoda, better known by his stage name Fort Minor, said he was "shocked and heartbroken" by the news, and confirmed to sceptical fans that Bennington had indeed died.

Vicky Cornell, wife of Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who took his own life in May and was good friends with Bennington, also expressed her sadness.
