Rumours have been swirling for some time about Fast & Furious taking flight and ascending into outer space - now, those rumours are being firmed up by someone central to the hit action franchise.

F Gary Gray, director of the latest instalment The Fate of the Furious, indicated to an interviewer that an intergalactic sequel could indeed happen.

The franchise's eighth film, Gray's first, was released earlier this year and even he admits the climactic submarine-versus-cars battle was eyebrow raising - to the point where he reckons a space sequel isn't off the table.

"Outer space? Listen, I wouldn't rule anything with this franchise," he told Screen Rant.

"When I read 'submarine', I'm like, 'OK, anything's possible'. You never know. I haven't read 'Dom on Mars' yet; but again, you just never know."

Dominic Toretto with his buddies Letty, Hobbs, Roman, Tej and Ramsey fighting alien terrorists on Mars indeed doesn't seem too crazy considering just how crazy this series has been getting.

And movie franchises that last as long as Fast & Furious often make the giant leap into space, with Friday the 13th, Air Bud, Hellraiser, Ice Age, Leprechaun, James Bond, The Muppets and Critters being notable examples.

The Fast & Furious franchise, which has made US$5.1 billion at the global box office so far, also may be setting up a crossover with the Terminator franchise - according to one fan theory exhaustively explained in a YouTube video:

The ninth Fast & Furious film is expected to be released in 2019.
