Identity Dance Company hip-hop champs head to Arizona

Identity Dance Company's four best teams are getting in their last rehearsals before they head to Arizona for the World hip Hop Dance Championship.

They're taking their largest-ever team with them, with 78 dancers attending, and the trip costs as much as a small house.

"I think we make up a third or a quarter of Team NZ and we couldn't be prouder," director Josh Cesan tells Newshub.

Aged between 12 and 31, the dancers will be competing against 4000 others from 50 countries.

Identity crew The Bradas have won the world competition the past two years in a row, so there's all the more pressure to bring home the gold.

Cesan says their past success give them a little more confidence heading back this year.

"We get that little feeling that when we go over there, we're not completely new kids on the block, so people know our name."

And practice makes perfect - the teams have been working tirelessly for up to 13 hours on some days.

"It's been really intense, but I can't say it hasn't been rewarding," chorographer Indigo Sagala says.

"Seeing their faces at the end of the night, just feeling like they've accomplished something and they're ready to take on the whole world, is so much more rewarding than giving time away."

Along with hours of preparation, the cost of sending almost 80 dancers to the States is huge - more than $300,000. But with the help of local sponsors and fundraising, they're ready to bring it on.

"I think the judges can expect a subtle annihilation. We're just going in for the absolute kill," Sagala says.

And with any luck, they'll bring the gold back home with them.
