Japandroids' secret sound: 'Just add more amps'

Canadian rock duo Japandroids are back on the road after a three-year break following their last tour.

Before they took their much-needed break from the roads, they performed more than 200 shows in over 40 countries.

"There's a lot of amazing things that come from touring that much and to all those places, but you can also really burn yourself out and run yourself really hard into the ground," Brian King told Newshub.

Burnt out and in need of new material, King and David Prowse used those three years off to write their third album and get excited about touring again.

"The majority of that time I was definitely itching to be back on a stage," Prowse said.

Now they're back on the road and ready to show fans their new sound.

Despite using just a guitar and drum kit, the duo manage to make each song sound like it's being played by a five-person band.

And the secret?

"Just add more amps, you don't need more people," Prowse revealed.

"Yeah, it's pretty simple. When in doubt, more amps."

While they're amping it up on stage, online it's a different story. Neither of them use social media, and King reckons it removes the mystery and magic behind the rock star.

"You know everything about every artist, you have a window into their lives, there is no mystery left, you don't need to use your imagination at all," he said.

"And I think that's kind of a shame."

After their shows in Auckland and Wellington on Friday and Saturday nights, the duo are now heading to Europe next month for the next leg of their tour.
