A Twitter account appearing to represent McDonald's Hong Kong seems to be going through a trying time at the moment, with regular promotional tweets interspersed with pleas for an unknown woman's return.

The account has been active since October 2016 and has been mentioned in tweets by the verified McDonald's account in the past, including one on Sunday morning (local time).

Mid-July this year was when things began to fall apart.

"This bitch freakin out about cheesecake while kids out here McDying. Relax," the account tweeted on July 24.

Things returned to normal for the rest of the day, before the next disturbing tweets came in.

On Sunday (NZT time), there was an impassioned plea: "Where is my son they took my son".

"I want to quit. She left me," came the next, after several hours of regular promotional tweeting.

"I would like my weekends if she just called me back for once. All I do is wait.

"I miss her so f***ing much. F*** this job. Where is my wife and where is my son."

The series of tweets have prompted curiosity and concern from Twitter users. Some theorised it's merely a PR stunt by McDonald's, while others have wondered whether the account was hacked.

But it turns out, it was neither - rather, one humourist playing a long game.

"This is not a McDonald's Twitter account but one that is impersonating a verified account," a McDonald's spokesperson told Newshub in a statement.

The account began tweeting its promotional material several months before it was first mentioned by a verified McDonald's account, meaning for those who came in with the later tweets, it appeared to be legit.

The McDonald's spokesperson said the fun's now over, and the company is working to get the account taken down.
