A new James Bond film is officially in the works, set to be released at the end of 2019.

It will be number 25 in the franchise about the MI6 spy, with multiple reports claiming Daniel Craig will reprise his main role.

The New York Times say the blonde Bond will return, citing "two people briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity".

The Mirror reported earlier this month that Craig is set to don the suit again, despite previously saying he'd rather "slash his wrists" than play the superspy again.

Previous speculation over who will take over the iconic role once Craig calls it quits have included Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba.

EON Productions, the British production company behind the franchise, say the new James Bond film will be released in the United States on November 8, 2019.

The last Bond film, Spectre, hit cinemas in 2015, more than 50 years after the first was released. Its predecessor, Skyfall, went on to become the highest-grossing Bond movie by far, making almost NZD$1.5 billion and winning two Oscars.

* Three is currently playing Season of Bond, with two more Bond films to go - Quantum of Solace airs Thursday, July 27 at 7.30pm and Skyfall airs Thursday, August 3 at 7.30pm on Three.
