Notoriously erratic actor Shia LeBeouf was arrested on Sunday (NZT) and charged with obstruction, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

A statement from the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department said the star approached a member of the public and a police officer, asking for a cigarette.

The statement said when he wasn't given a cigarette he became disorderly, using profanities and vulgar language.

Police said he was told to leave the area but refused and became aggressive toward the officer.

"When the officer attempted to place LaBeouf under arrest, LaBeouf ran to a nearby hotel," the statement said.

"LaBeouf was arrested in the hotel lobby, where his disorderly behaviour continued."

The actor is in Savannah, Georgia filming a movie.

The star of the Transformers franchise films has a chequered history with the law; earlier this year he was arrested in New York after getting into a brawl with a man at his own art exhibition.

In 2014, LaBeouf pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after an outburst at a Broadway theatre. He was arrested in 2015 for public intoxication, and driving under the influence of alcohol in 2008.

The star had agreed to get alcohol abuse treatment after the incident.
