The Block NZ 2017: Soaking wet bathroom week with tears and tantrums

This week was one of the biggest for the teams, with bathroom week seeing them break down into tears and tantrums in typical style.

At times it seemed like some might not finish, with flooding and dead pets back home throwing a few spanners in the works. But they all made it to the end and on Sunday night revealed four vastly different bathrooms in similar tiny spaces, which revealed the extent of crammed Auckland living.

For Ling and Zing (whom my colleague has been calling Phil and Dil all week but I'm pretty sure he got confused with the Rugrats twins), their usual laid-back approach to renovating a room in a week meant that again they ran the real risk of not finishing. However, to everyone's surprise they churned out a modern and stylish bathroom in time, with a wooden feature wall no less! It was definitely a step up from their children's hospital room aesthetic of last week, although the grey and wood look did slightly make it seem like a futuristic prison cell.

The key to the styling was definitely the two Macleans toothbrushes on the counter.

The judges said the room was "schmick" - "super sexy well finished and looking good".

Although bathroom week is traditionally one of the toughest weeks of the whole season, it was not so for the Hamilton brothers-in-law who claimed it was their "crusiest week". You've only had two boys, steady on. Last week's winners, who are going for the "artistic, sexy clientele" (what?) took a big risk with an all-black decor that was reminiscent of the famous black kitchen from season four.

One day I would like to have the same confidence in myself which the Mico bathrooms lady had in her plumbing accessories, tonight delivering them some "sexy, sexy tap wear...it's pretty hot".

I don't know what her definition of hot is, but I have to say It looked like a bathroom for Alice in Wonderland. Or as Jason the judge said, "it's like a Spanish public toilet".

There were so many tiles it made me feel seasick. Their 'nature feature' was a tiny cactus in a tiny terrarium. I hate to say it because they're so nice,  but the whole thing was a trainwreck.

Stace and Yanita

The Palmerston North besties were determined to do better after a pretty average week last week. And man, did they ever. Their bold pink and blue glass feature wall was so pretty I want one in every room of the house I will never afford. I could quite happily never leave Stace and Yanita's bathroom. The girls are back!

In addition to being the prettiest bathroom of the four, the finishing also couldn't be faulted. It may be a little feminine for some buyers, but it was also practical.

Julia and Ali

Last week's losers, and also easily the rudest girls currently on television, pulled out all the stops this week, determined to better their scores (not hard to be honest). When they got the feedback that they should have installed heated towel rails, Julia replied that "we have under-floor heating...it's not like we're living in the f***ing 1800s".

Oh that's weird, why did you style your bathroom like something from a bygone century then? With all gold tapware and about 14 different types of tiles, it looked like something from the castle of King Henry VIII.

The girls also had to include more green leafy things hanging off the walls in this bathroom, similar to their dismal failure of a children's bedroom last week. Whoever ends up owning this home is going to wake up to a flock of birds nesting somewhere in their home.

The judges liked the bathroom, but it made me feel seasick. Or maybe that was just nausea at their delighted reaction to the other contestant's failures. Who knows?

Stace and Yanita took out the room, (yay!) but the twins came in hot and played their 'minus two' prize from an earlier challenge. So they won. In the end.

That's all I have to say about that.
