'Boom!' Auckland mum stars in dominant 9 in 10 win

An Auckland local who admitted she would probably draw a blank during The AM Show's 9 in 10 has instead taken it out with aplomb on the Sky Tower's 20th anniversary.

Vanessa explained to host Duncan Garner that she was listening to The AM Show while sitting at a café beneath the Sky Tower when she heard that the opportunity to play 9 in 10 was just 186 metres above her.

However she confessed when she got up there that she didn't know why she'd chosen to, as she anticipated she'd freeze under pressure when it came to giving her nine answers.

But Vanessa needn't have worried, confidently surpassing what was expected of her to win a $10,000 spending spree at Bike Barn by naming no fewer than 12 states in the USA in 10 seconds.

"Florida, New York, Vermont, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, California, North Dakota, South Dakota, North Carolina, South Carolina," she got through, as the buzzer sounded.

"We're going to have to go upstairs, Garner responded, before adding, "You could be an accidental winner!"

Upon being asked how she'd done, Vanessa still wasn't hugely confident that she'd won despite exceeding what was required by some distance.

"I have no idea [if I won]. I feel like I was rattling them off, but you know, you never know," she said.

Based on her hesitation, Garner decided to toy with her by telling her that she didn't actually get 9 in 10 - which drew a perplexed "What?" from Vanessa - but instead told her she got more.

"Boom!" she responded with a laugh, before explaining that she was going to get something from Bike Barn for her daughter, who turns one tomorrow.

"You're gonna be able to get the best one-year-old bike seat in the world, with every accessory in the world, and still have $9000 left over!" Garner said.
