A new trailer for upcoming film 9/11 starring Charlie Sheen and Whoopi Goldberg has been released, and its already been deemed "awful".

The movie documents the day the Twin Towers fell, with Sheen playing a trapped businessman in an elevator, and Goldberg the building operator. Fans who have seen the trailer have taken to twitter to suggest it looks like "a spoof" or "a made for TV" portrayal of the tragic event.

Social media users have also pointed out that the inappropriateness of casting Sheen in the film's leading role, given his long time stance as a '9/11 truther.' The former Two and a Half Men star has been an outspoken advocate for the conspiracy theory that the terrorist attacks were an inside job by the US government.

In the new preview, Sheen says the film is "really a story about honouring those that didn't make it and those that did."

The film is set for release in September but many on Twitter have already made their minds up:

Luis Guzman, Gina Gershon, Wood Harris, Jacqueline Bisset, Olga Fonda and Bruce Davison make up the rest of the ensemble cast.

The movie is set for release on September 8.
