Hollywood is gearing up another gender-swapped remake of a classic, this time with a new female-led adaptation of Lord of the Flies.

The iconic 1954 William Golding novel, which was the basis of films released in 1963 and 1990, follows a group of Western students who become stranded on an island and descend into savagery.

Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the male duo behind films including What Maisie Knew, The Deep End and Bee Season, are set to write and direct.

"[The story] is aggressively suspenseful, and taking the opportunity to tell it in a way it hasn't been told before, with girls rather than boys, is that it shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew," McGehee told Deadline.

"It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression. People still talk about the movie and the book from the standpoint of pure storytelling."

When the film begins production has not been announced.
