A graphic sex scene featuring Jesus Christ in comic book adaptation Preacher has shocked viewers and is being met with calls for Christians to "rally against it".

The Seth Rogen-produced show, which airs on the AMC network in the US, followed the scene with Jesus telling his lover he had to "do something" for his "dad", before going off and being crucified.

Preacher follows a religious figure who is given a superpower after a disaster and enlists the help of a vampire in his ensuing search for God, whom he intends to hold accountable for the world's evils.

"Depicting Jesus in a grotesque sex scene is an assault on the sensibilities of all Christians, as well as people of good will who are not Christians," said US Catholic League president Bill Donohue in a statement.

"We have been treated to this kind of fare from some pay-per-view channels, but we are not accustomed to AMC getting into the mud. If this is a signal of what it aspires to become, we will rally Christians against it."

Rogen has responded to the controversy on Twitter, declaring is a "good endorsement".

Before the episode aired, the Pineapple Express star had admitted he was "shocked" at being allowed to broadcast the scene.
