Jared Leto takes centre stage in the latest trailer for the reboot of cult sci-fi action film Blade Runner - the visually striking clip giving fans a deeper insight into the villainous Niander Wallace.

In the new TV spot for the film, Wallace (Leto) is in the process of manufacturing an army of 'replicants', a subset he calls "the future" that it is believed are set to replace humans.

The film's protagonists, Officer K (Ryan Gosling) and Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), are tasked by the Los Angeles Police Department with obstructing Wallace and the replicants from taking over humanity.

Set 30 years on from the original film, Blade Runner 2049 tacks onto the story of Los Angeles Police Department Officer K, a new character who uncovers a hidden secret that has the ability to send society into a state of mayhem.

The new footage from the movie - produced by Ridley Scott, who directed the original - gives one of the first looks at Officer K's love interest Joi (Ana de Armas), who promises to come with him as he fights off Wallace and the replicants.

It also provides a closer look at the dystopian settings in the film, which comes out later this year.

New director Denis Villeneuve, of Arrival and Sicario acclaim, looks to have stayed true to the original film while also expanding its settings beyond the confines of futuristic Los Angeles prevalent in the first Blade Runner.

Blade Runner 2049 is scheduled for release in New Zealand in early October.
