A man has been caught with ecstasy slathered in Vegemite, cling-wrapped to his penis, while entering an Australian music festival, police say.

The suspect is one of several accused of using their genitals to try and smuggle drugs into Melbourne's Listen Out festival on the weekend.

Port Phillip Acting Inspector Stuart Bailey said 24 people were found trying to take drugs into this year's event, where a woman last year died from an overdose.

"We found several males had the drugs wrapped in plastic and wrapped around their penis," he said.

"One smothered his MDMA in Vegemite believing the dog would not be able to detect his drugs. Wrong!"

In addition to the two dozen cases of attempted drug smuggling, 19 other people were given drug diversions, three were cautioned for cannabis and two others are expected to be interviewed about being in possession of ketamine.

Another attendee, believed to be under the influence of LSD, had to be physically restrained by police and taken to hospital.

However, Insp Bailey said the majority of the 15,000 festival-goers were well-behaved, with more people in medical tents over headaches and dehydration rather than drug use.

Listen Out 2017 featured the likes of Green Velvet, Duke Dumont, Pnau, Bryson Tiller, Mac Miller and Jai Wolf.
