Destiny 2 developer Bungie is changing the design of an item in the recently-released blockbuster sequel after it was found to bear striking similarity to an alt-right hate symbol.

The studio apologised in a tweet this afternoon, saying: "We renounce hate in all forms" and that "the likeness was unintentional. We are removing it."

The game item is a gauntlet the player may equip, which bears a striking similarity to the flag of fictional nation "Kekistan", a hate symbol which is itself based on Nazi symbology.

The word 'kek' itself is somewhat of a catchphrase in alt-right circles, having multiple contextual meanings.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Centre website, an American institution which monitors hate speech and radical groups, the Kekistan Banner "perfectly mimics a German Nazi war flag, with the Kek logo replacing the swastika and the green replacing the infamous German red."
