Kiwi breaks down after Aussie radio hosts pay off her $80k student loan

"Well let's do something that's not on our rundown."

These are words to send any radio producer into a spin... But this wasn't your typical off-script prank.

A Kiwi radio producer crippled by an $80,000 student loan debt has had it wiped by an unlikely source - the Australian radio stars she works with.

Kiwi Sacha French has worked with Kiss FM drive hosts Dave Hughes and Kate Langbroek for 15 years, but only recently told them about her mounting student debt.

"I borrowed $41,000, I've paid off $52,000, and I owe $80,000," she told listeners on air.

Ms French took the loans out in the early '90s while studying, before moving to Australia.

There she had a child - but as a single mum she hasn't been able to move home with her son, meaning interest on the loan is mounting.

Ms French told Newshub she thought she would never pay off the loan.

"I got to the point where I thought... 'this is just something I'm going to have for the rest of my life'."

She tried to negotiate, via a lawyer, with IRD - but to no avail.

That's where Hughesy and Kate came in, the pair each paying $40,000 out of their own pockets to wipe French's entire student debt.

"I don't think there are words to describe how grateful I am for what they've done for me," Ms French said.

A life-changing gesture from two of Australian radio's biggest stars.
