Lady Gaga has cancelled a Rio de Janeiro concert after being rushed to hospital while suffering "severe pain".

A short statement has been posted on the 'Poker Face' hitmaker's social media accounts explaining the cancellation.

"Lady Gaga is suffering from severe physical pain that has impacted her ability to perform. As a result, she sadly must withdraw from this Friday's Rock in Rio performance."

Gaga also tweeted that she was "devastated" about not doing the show, asking her Brazilian fans for "grace and understanding".

"It's not simply hip pain or wear and tear from tour, I'm in severe pain. I'm in good hands with the very best doctors," she added.

In her upcoming Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, the 31-year-old reveals she suffers from Fibromyalgia, a condition which causes severe fatigue and chronic pain.
