A man has died after running into the titular massive effigy being burnt at the climax of the 2017 Burning Man festival.

Security and fire rescue officers failed to stop the man from getting beyond the safe area and photographers captured the moment he reached the inferno and fell to the ground.

Although Black Rock City fire personnel rescued him from the fire, the unnamed man later died from his injuries.

This year the festival's theme was 'Radical Ritual', with organisers inviting participants to celebrate "the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime".

Tycho, Carl Cox, DJ Tennis, Jamie Jones and Dixon were among the 137 acts on the 2017 line-up.

The arts and music festival features the burning of a giant wooden effigy each year, with the humanoid structure reaching approximately 15m high.
