Former Prime Minister John Key's son Max has challenged Jacinda Ardern to a 'DJ battle', convinced he can push buttons better than she can.

The 22-year-old former boyfriend of beauty pageant runner-up Amelia Finlayson is an aspiring DJ and producer, frequently promoting his own music via vlogs on his YouTube account.

Ardern has a number of gigs as a DJ under her belt, including a slot at the 2014 Laneway Festival in Auckland - a high-profile performance Max may be envious of, leading to him laying down a challenge during an interview with BuzzFeed Australia.

"I want to challenge you, Jacinda Ardern, to a DJ battle. Anytime, anywhere. Name the place, I'm there," says Max.

"It's what the people want."

The publication reports Max is "quietly confident" he'd win the music selection competition.

Ardern has not responded to the challenge.

Max also joked with BuzzFeed about running for prime minister in 2044 and doing a "little dubstep remix" of the national anthem.

Neither Max or Ardern have previously performed as DMC-style battle DJs.
