The Bachelor NZ's Art Green opens up on his proposal to Matilda Rice

Star of the debut season of The Bachelor NZ Art Green has opened up about how he proposed to Matilda Rice, revealing how it almost turned into a nightmare.

"I called her dad while we were in [Rarotonga] because he's an absolute liability with this kind of thing, so I called him just before I dropped a knee... he was pretty exited," Green told Edge afternoon hosts Jono, Ben and Sharyn.

Green then took listeners through the proposal, describing it as "very cliché, but just perfect".

"There were some local guys playing Eric Clapton music and it was perfect. And the sun was setting and we decided to go for a stroll down the beach.

"Then we sat on the rock, and exchanged some more cliché 'I love yous".

It could have been a beach wedding disaster, as Green described how he dropped the ring whilst proposing.

It was all okay though as he joked he "did some burpees and jumped back up".

The radio hosts paid a jokey reference to Green's time on The Bachelor NZ, with Sharyn asking "did you have a shirt on for this?" and Green responding "obviously not!"

"Then I asked if Matty would marry me and she said yes, and I started crying."

Rice told the radio show she had no idea the proposal would be on their tropical holiday.

"We had talked about it quite a bit so I knew the proposal was coming, but I had no idea it would be in Raro," she said.
