Suge Knight says Tupac was not killed in a fateful drive-by shooting of 1996, claiming the rapper was "laughing and joking" in hospital after the attack.

The former Death Row Records boss made the bold claim from an LA County jail, where he is being held on charges of murder and attempted murder, during a phone interview with Ice-T and Soledad O'Brien.

Suge was in the vehicle with the 'Hit 'Em Up' rapper when he was fatally shot, making him one of the last people to see the iconic musician alive.

"When Pac died - if he really did, you know?" Suge says in the interview, before being asked to clarify.

"I mean, when I left that hospital, me and Pac were laughing and joking. So I don't see how somebody can turn from doing well to doing bad."

Suge is then asked directly - is Tupac alive?

"I'm gonna tell you that with Pac, you never know."

Tupac was shot four times, including twice in the chest, after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match in Las Vegas, on September 7, 1996. Suge was the only other occupant in the car and was himself hit in the head by fragmentation.

Tupac died six days later from internal bleeding after being placed in an induced coma.

The interview with Suge was recorded for a new documentary entitled Who Shot Biggie & Tupac? which airs on in the US Fox on September 24.

Suge, real name Marion Hugh Knight Jr, has a long history of drug-related and violent crimes, dating back to at least 1987.
