Die! Die! Die!'s 'melodic' and 'free' sixth album

"Melodic" and "free" may not be what you expect when listening to a punk rock/post-punk/noise pop band, that's how Die! Die! Die! are describing their newest album.

For 14 years Die! Die! Die! has been rocking the world - New York, London, even Paris. But one place sticks out: China.

"I just find it quite interesting to tour there, just given the level of development, and it's pretty exciting," frontman Andrew Wilson told Newshub.

They're just back from Chinese tour number three and on Friday, they released their new album Charm Offensive.

It's their sixth record but it's different from their previous work.

"This one's a little more melodic and a little more free, and the structure's a little bit more light," Wilson said.

That might be a strange description for their music, but their fans love it.

So much so, they've been asked to perform at the Laneway Festival early next year.

"We're pretty excited, no, very excited, to be asked to play," Wilson said.

"I saw one of my favourite bands from Dunedin there, the year before last, who were a big inspiration in getting me into music."

Lead singer Wilson has been with the band since day one and after years on the road he's now living where he feels most at home: K Rd.

After all that time, the band has changed, but Wilson says Kiwi music has too.

"Other than the Datsuns, who were an amazing world class band, there were some pretty cheesy generic versions of overseas music. But you definitely don't see that anymore."

And with a new album usually comes a new tour.

Die! Die! Die! Will kick off its tour this week in Hamilton, and it's promised to be "melodic" and "free".
