Michael Bay is set to produce the first live-action movie based on hit animated children's series Dora the Explorer.

It may seem like an unlikely choice, given that the filmmaker is responsible for the critically reviled yet commercially successful Transformers franchise, along with Pearl Harbor, Armageddon and The Island.

Bay's presumed desire to constantly surround little Dora with explosions, sports cars, US flags and bikini models may be somewhat reined in by his not sitting in the director's chair - that will be filled instead by Nicholas Stoller, whose previous films include Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Bad Neighbours.

Dora the Explorer ran from 2000 to 2014 and followed a bilingual Mexican-American girl who embarked on a series of adventures with her monkey Boots. It included interactive elements, allowing viewers to solve new puzzles and riddles in every episode.

The movie will reportedly see Dora as a teenager who moves to the city to live with her cousin, Diego.
