Jesse Mulligan reveals the best thing about Jacinda Ardern's phone call with Donald Trump

Labour Day in New Zealand this year marked the first time US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister-elect Jacinda Ardern spoke to each other.

Not a lot of details of the phone call's contents were disclosed, but the hosts of Three's The Project weighed in on potential benefits and drawbacks the conversation produced - along with how it was allegedly prepared for.

"You'd be stoked getting a call from Donald Trump because you'd know that every five minutes he spends on the phone with you was five minutes he was not descending the world into nuclear war," says Jesse Mulligan.

"I like that glass-half-full perspective, Jesse, but I'm sort of the other way. Like, great, now he knows where we are and he's paying attention to us," added Kanoa Lloyd.

"I would've been quite nervous talking to Trump, but apparently Jacinda practiced by talking to the orange voting guy," said Josh Thomson.

Tonight's guest host on The Project, Petra Bagust, pointed out whatever was said, Ms Ardern must have done well because Mr Trump didn't take to Twitter following the call.

Ms Ardern said the former Celebrity Apprentice host was genuinely interested in the recent election and wanted her to pass along his warm regards to the New Zealand people.

They'll meet in person at the APEC conference next month.
